Kolkata: Despite CM Mamata Banerjee advising against it, Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday indicated that he would go to Murshidabad’s strife-torn zones to make an “on-spot” assessment for a report to Centre. Bose met some of the victims of violence, following which he decided to visit the dictrict in the evening. This was later rescheduled to Friday morning.
“I want to make an on-the-spot visit to gauge the situation,” the governor said, adding that it was desirable for peace to return.
Many of the violence victims had lost their homes and pleaded with Bose for permanent BSF camps to ensure their safety, saying they did not have faith in the state police.
The governor is expected on Friday to meet more people, especially women, hit by the violence and also discuss the law and order situation with officials. “If peace is restored, I will be the happiest person and will make my report accordingly,” he said.
Earlier on Thursday, Bengal BJP president and junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar went to Raj Bhavan with victims of violence. Majumdar, who held a dharna in front of Bhawani Bhavan on Wednesday, had sought an appointment with Bose to take the delegation of eight victims. Accompanied by former BJP MP Rupa Ganguly and three MLAs, Majumdar spoke to Bose at length. He alleged that miscreants from a specific community conducted targeted attacks on the victims. Their houses were vandalised, and they were forced to flee.
“There is a charter of demands, and we have placed it before the governor. The National Human Rights Commission team is already at the spot. They will visit Malda on Friday,” Majumdar said.
“The state police and intelligence are busy fact-checking rather than providing relief to the people. The public reposed their faith in the administration. But their homes were vandalised in front of the police. They don’t even have foodgrain at home now. A person in Dhuliyan had Trinamool’s party office in his house. The office and his house, both were vandalised,” he added.
