First revealed in 2022, the Where Winds Meet release date has already been a bit of a journey. Since its announcement, we’ve seen a handful of trailers, a Where Winds Meet beta, and a surprise delay for the open-world game‘s Chinese audience. However, Where Winds Meet already looks to be worth the wait, so join us as we explore the story and gameplay revealed thus far.
Where Winds Meet release date estimate
We expect the Where Winds Meet release date to fall sometime in 2025 and is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices. The RPG game has already officially launched in China, but has yet to receive an international release date.
Where Winds Meet was first revealed at Gamescom 2022, and while there are definite parallels with the likes of Ghost of Tsushima, it’s also a little reminiscent of Breath of the Wild. Unlike Ghost, however, you’re not the last man standing in a war-torn land. Instead, life goes on while you roam around the world.
There was a closed beta test for the game back in April 2024; however, there hasn’t been any information about the international launch since then.
Where Winds Meet gameplay
Where Winds Meet’s combat looks as impressive as its visuals, though stealth could well be your friend. If you’re a fan of backstabbing enemies, you can become your own murderous chiropractor. If slicing people up isn’t your thing, there are a multitude of weapons on offer, including spears, swords, fans, dual blades, umbrellas, and glaives.
In a PlayStation blog post, the developer speaks about the mystical powers you can use not just in combat, but getting around the world, including running up cliffs or across water, or grabbing objects that are out of reach. You’ll also be able to mimic animal behavior, leaping like a toad, or roaring like a lion.
That said, it appears that Where Winds Meet doesn’t lean heavily into the supernatural, with most of the opponents on show being distinctly human. Developer Everstone also confirms that you’ll be able to choose your protagonist’s occupation, which in turn informs their initial skill set. We’re half hoping you can just wander around a village, shoeing horses, just when you need a break.
In a behind-the-scenes video shared in early June 2024, we get a much better idea of how Where Winds Meet’s weapons are going to behave in-game. Fabled martial arts choreographer Stephen Tung Wai, who you may remember as the student who got slapped by Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon’s iconic “don’t think, feel” scene, has been brought on board, so you know the action’s going to, well, slap. Here we can see the motion capture team and Wai effectively troubleshooting turning unconventional tools into lethal weapons.
