Given the caliber of the competition these days – Stellaris, Age of Wonders, even the unfailingly popular Civ 6 itself – it’s no mystery as to why Civilization 7 is still struggling. More than a month since launch, Firaxis’ 4X game sequel is still missing some crucial features. Updates and patches have made a difference, but in terms of the substantial map and user interface (UI) changes that players are waiting for, well, those aren’t here yet – at least not officially. A transformative new Civilization 7 mod improves on some of the game’s biggest problems, and you can get it right now.
The latest Civilization 7 update has improved map generation and the Ages system, but the 4X game is still a long climb from the dizzying heights of Civ 6 – and, in fact, most of its predecessors. Right now, the UI and the building systems don’t provide enough detail, or the information needed to properly plan your civ. In higher difficulties, it’s particularly essential to maximize production and resources, and take advantage of the adjacency bonuses you get from building the right amenities and wonders on the right tiles. ‘Detailed Map Tacks’ was one of the greatest mods for Civilization 6. Now, we can finally add it to the list of best Civilization 7 mods.
Though it’s still in beta, Detailed Map Tacks by ‘wltk’ is available today. It gives you a menu containing every possible building and wonder in Civilization 7. You pick one, drop it onto a tile, and the mod will show you precisely how many resources this building would generate if you actually constructed it there. Even better, if you then place another tack next to it, the mod will calculate the adjacency yield, and tell you whether these buildings complement one another or not.

In short, it’s a way to survey the benefits and stats of every tile and also meticulously plan your civilization before actually committing to building anything – it lets you create an extensive, fully informed blueprint ahead of time, something that is absolutely crucial, especially when playing on Deity.
The mod is still in its beta form, and wltk says that some tile calculations need to be perfected. There are also plans to expand the menu and the tacks themselves so that you can view potential yield changes based on technological advances, civics, and so on. Nevertheless, this may be the greatest Civ 7 mod to date. You can get it here.
Otherwise, you might want to try some of the best strategy games, or maybe the best grand strategy games instead.
