In Doom Eternal, you have to sprint, leap, and pirouette to stay alive and get the drop on the hellspawn. In Half-Life and Half-Life 2, it’s all about keeping your HEV suit charged and, especially during the many platforming and physics-based puzzle sections, watching your step and proceeding with extreme caution. In most FPS games, you have to be either precise and skillful or slow and careful. Robocop Rogue City is the total opposite. You’re a machine. You’re a tank. Grab a 12 gauge, march right in there, and blast bad guys at your robotic leisure. With a new DLC just announced, one of the best hidden-gem shooters on Steam is now the cheapest it’s ever been.
They do exist, but truly great movie tie-in games are rare. Though it’s all about the action and the gunfights, what Robocop Rogue City still manages to capture is the darkly funny satirical edge of the films – if Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 movie is partly about the monstrousness of corporate power, the fact that this is an FPS game where it’s very, very hard for you to die, and your enemies are essentially big, bipedal ants for you to stamp on, tells that story.
In the films, OCP is a caricature of money, power, and corruption. In the game, as a product of OCP, you can do whatever vicious and violent thing you want and barely take a scratch. It becomes this running joke about the frightening invincibility of The System, with the player and Robocop as the punchline. All told, Rogue City deserves much more attention. The new DLC, Unfinished Business, looks like a credible expansion to one of PC’s best sleeper hits. But there’s another reason to finally give Rogue City a try.
