Despite a relatively low promotional buzz, ‘Thudarum’, the latest Malayalam drama starring Mohanlal and Shobana, has kickstarted its theatrical journey on a strong note. The film, which released in cinemas today, recorded impressive advance bookings in Kerala, indicating solid audience anticipation for this emotional family drama.
Impressive pre-sales
According to the industry tracker Forum Keralam, ‘Thudarum’ earned a whopping Rs 2.33 crores from 1,186 shows across Kerala in pre-sales alone. This makes it the second biggest pre-release booking for a Malayalam film in 2025, just behind Empuraan. For a film categorized as a “non-hyped family padam,” these figures are nothing short of remarkable.
Plot, crew
Set in the tranquil hill town of Ranni in Pathanamthitta, Thudarum tells the heartfelt story of Shanmughan (played by Mohanlal), a humble taxi driver who shares a deep emotional bond with his aging Ambassador car. While it may look like an old, worn-out vehicle to others, it represents family and memories to Shanmughan. The narrative unfolds with quiet intensity, capturing his daily struggles and the extraordinary lengths he goes to protect what he holds dear.
Joining Mohanlal is Shobana in the role of Lalitha, marking a much-awaited on-screen reunion for the iconic pair. The supporting cast includes Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, Farhaan Faasil, Irshad Ali, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Thomas Mathew, and Krishna Prabha.
‘Thudarum’ trivia
Director Tharun Moorthy, known for Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka, revealed an interesting casting backstory during an interview with Red FM. Although Shobana was always the team’s top choice for Lalitha, initial communication hurdles made them consider Tamil actress Jyothika for the role. Jyothika was reportedly impressed by the script and even agreed to join the project. However, due to a previously planned world tour with her family, she had to step back before shooting began.
