An interesting experiment by a YouTuber has shown the potential overclocking benefits of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT gaming GPU. In a series of tests, an overclocked PowerColor Red Devil RX 9070 XT with undervolting applied showed faster frame rates in Cyberpunk 2077 than an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080, despite being hundreds of dollars cheaper.
This new AMD GPU is the first card in several years that has seriously challenged Nvidia’s near-total dominance of the market. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is a powerful and affordable option for many gamers, making it onto our best graphics card shortlist as the best option for most PC gamers.

German YouTuber Der8auer put his own RX 9070 XT to the test in a recent video, using the premium PowerColor Red Devil model aimed specifically at enthusiasts. The YouTuber initially began by testing out some fan profile changes, setting the fans at a fixed 49% speed, and pushing the clock speed on the GPU to 3.03GHz.
However, after increasing the power limit to around 360W, the card boosted to 3.1GHz, above the RX 9070 XT’s rated 3.06GHz limit. After undervolting the card by 200mV, this figure increased to 3.4GHz, although it only remained stable with an approximate 170mV undervolting mod applied.
The results of the test are pretty conclusive, however. With a modest increase in clock speed, this particular RX 9070 XT was shown to run with an average 66fps in Cyberpunk 2077 using 4K Ultra settings with no ray tracing. That beats the performance of the RTX 5080 under the same conditions by 1fps, while also placing it higher than the RTX 4080, which could only reach 56fps.
While this is a good sign for overclockers, Der8auer warns that, for the moment, overclocking isn’t a hugely stable process on the RX 9070 XT. However, should AMD improve the stability of overclocking for this new AMD Radeon GPU, then it could offer raw performance well above its remit in the mid-tier gaming market. Much will depend on the card you choose to buy, however, with this particular PowerColor Red Devil card using higher quality components.
