A Splitgate 2 open beta is coming in May, and developer 1047 Games promises “way more” in the next public test than its recent alpha offered. The new multiplayer FPS is one of my most-anticipated upcoming games in 2025 – I absolutely adored the original Splitgate’s blend of movement, verticality, and portal-based strategy, and I’m excited to see how the studio builds on that for its free-to-play sequel.
With the recent Splitgate 2 open alpha now over, 1047 Games says it’s pleased by the results. “It was a massive success, thanks to all of you,” the developer writes in a new blog post. “Across the board, the feedback that we got from players was that this was a big improvement from our closed alpha last summer.” It shares stats from the test including over 500,000 games played, more than a 200% growth in new players, and – perhaps most significantly – over 90% of respondents saying they would recommend the new FPS.
“We’re already hard at work making improvements based on what we learned, but we also want to take a moment to celebrate what went well,” 1047 continues. “We know there is still more work to do, but we’re feeling confident we’re headed in the right direction – and that’s thanks to all of you.”
With that test in the bag, the next big milestone in the run-up to the Splitgate 2 release date is the open beta. While there aren’t specific dates given, 1047 says, “For now, just mark your calendars for May. To be safe, maybe just take the whole month off now.” That suggests it might kick off early into the month, and that we could be seeing quite an extended stretch of access.
If you’re wondering whether there will be new content, the answer from 1047 is a resounding yes. “The open beta is going to have way more than the open alpha. Way more.” As if to further emphasize this fact, the official social media accounts for the free Steam game its latest teaser trailer with the message, “You’ve only seen half of what’s in store. Join the Splitgate 2 open beta in May.”
