Taylor Swift has never shied away from putting real-life events into her lyrics, but this time, she made sure to ask permission first. When The Tortured Poets Department dropped, fans immediately speculated that the “Lucy” mentioned in the album’s title track referred to Lucy Dacus, a singer-songwriter and member of Boygenius. Now, Dacus has officially confirmed it.
In a new interview, she revealed that Swift personally reached out to her before the song’s release, making sure she was okay with the reference.

Dacus told People, “She actually texted me and asked for my approval,” adding that it was surreal to hear her own name in the song. She also added, “This [was] the first Taylor record to come out since meeting her, and listening to a friend’s record feels so much different than a stranger’s record, So I was like, ‘This is really weird. This voice that I’ve heard basically what feels like my whole waking life saying my name.”
The line in question suggests heavy emotions tied to Swift’s brief but highly publicized relationship with The 1975’s Matty Healy in 2023. Swift sings, “But you told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen.” The “Jack” in the lyrics is widely believed to be Jack Antonoff, Swift’s longtime collaborator.
Dacus and Healy were once close, but in 2023, their friendship soured after Healy joked about a Boygenius-inspired band. Dacus dismissed him with, “You don’t hear from me at all,” and soon after, Healy deactivated his social media, sparking fallout rumors.
