Take a step back and forget for a second it’s not an RTS, and Mechabellum looks like classic Command and Conquer, reimagined with giant, missile-and-laser-equipped robots. Hundreds of units. Explosions everywhere. Total chaos. Gorgeous and grim in equal measure, Mechabellum is spiritually reminiscent of erstwhile hits like Total Annihilation and BattleTech, but plays like a modern autobattler. Boasting great user scores, if you haven’t played it yet, there’s a completely new edition available now, and even a free weekend on the horizon.
Launched back in September, Mechabellum is part strategy game, but mostly autobattler – you assemble your units, choose cards and buffs, then unleash hell on the enemy forces during time-limited rounds, before consolidating your metallic troops and preparing your next onslaught. Personally, I’ve never been interested in Teamfight Tactics, Hearthstone, and some of the other genre titans. But Mechabellum, partly because I’m a sucker for mech games generally, and partly because it feels like an aesthetic homage to PC’s golden age, stands apart.

Developer Game River has just announced a new publishing partnership with Dreamhaven, the studio founded by Blizzard and DnD legend Mike Morhaime. To mark the occasion, as well as the standard version you can now get Mechabellum Premium Edition, which gives you 18 exclusive skins, various unique avatars, and special emoticons. The Mechabellum Premium Edition is on Steam now for $29.99. You can get it right here.
But if you want to hold out and try the game before you buy, Mechabellum will be part of the upcoming Steam Free-to-Play Weekend which runs between Friday April 4 and Tuesday April 8. Game River also says that Mechabellum’s 2025 roadmap is being refined, with new units, specialists, and tech upgrades on the way in coming months.
If Mechabellum has piqued your interest, you might also want to try some of the best RTS games, or maybe the best grand strategy games on PC today.
