Counter-Strike 2 mapmaker Lillykyu recreated 2012 endless runner Subway Surfers in Counter-Strike 2 — and it looks super fun. Judging from a clip posted on X on Tuesday, the Counter-Strike 2 mod called Subway Smurfers plays near identical to the original game: You run along train tracks dodging trains and other obstacles while collecting coins and power-ups. The coins collected in Subway Smurfers can be used to unbox Counter-Strike 2 knives.
Lillykyu is actually known for these sorts of iconic game remakes in Counter-Strike 2: A collection on Steam Workshop shows remakes for Duck Hunt, the Paint app, Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja. But the Subway Surfers remake in Counter-Strike 2 hits different; the game is still everywhere, thanks to the internet’s “sludge content,” that pairs Subway Surfers’ hypnotic gameplay with other videos. Maybe we’ll start seeing Subway Smurfers as an alternative — freshen up the sludge genre — spliced up with videos on TikTok soon.
Counter-Strike 2 was released in 2023, the next iteration of the franchise’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive from 2012. It’s almost always in the number one slot on Steam, by a lot: Counter-Strike 2 has well over 1 million concurrent players at the moment, much more than Dota 2’s 550,000 concurrent players in the second spot.
It’s a free-to-play game, which makes it super accessible, and player-made maps like Subway Smurfers keep the game interesting and always with new content.
