Normally, when you think of Dead by Daylight killers, you think of, well, bad guys. There’s Dracula from Castlevania, myriad classic horror villains, and various in-universe characters that are desperate to hack The Fog’s survivor roster to pieces. It may come as a surprise, then, that Tokyo Ghoul’s protagonist, Ken Kaneki, will be the next DBD killer, aptly entitled ‘The Ghoul.’ Set to put a horror spin on the iconic anime character, he’s available right now on the game’s PTB.
Now there’s been several clues that something Tokyo Ghoul’s been in the works. Dead by Daylight‘s ever-eerie changeling, The Unknown, who foreshadowed the releases of Dungeons and Dragons’ Vecna, is currently referencing Tokyo Ghoul in its voicelines, and a poster on Greenville Square feels like a throwaway reference to the anime. Well, your dreams (or nightmares) have come true, folks, as Ken Kaneki is, indeed, the horror game‘s latest killer.
If you’re familiar with Tokyo Ghoul, you’ll know that, following a lethal encounter with Rize Kamishiro, a Ghoul, some of Kaneki’s organs are replaced with hers, meaning he becomes a half-Ghoul. This leaves him in a bit of an odd spot: these creatures kill and eat people to survive, but Kaneki is still human. He goes on to grapple with his newfound identity at Anteiku, a coffee shop run by Ghouls.
In Dead by Daylight’s universe, however, Kaneki is tortured by Tokyo Ghoul: Jack’s Jason, pushing his mind to breaking point. Upon his escape, he’s enveloped by The Fog and set loose by The Entity, thirsty for flesh and calculated in his cruelty.
The highlight of his kit is his Kagune tentacles, which erupt from his back and can propel him around the map. This means that he literally gets the drop on Survivors given the scale of his mobility, and if his attacks are successful, he’ll enter Enraged Mode, powering up his kit. Combine this with his pressure-focused Perk, and it’s a match made in hell.
Behaviour promises that his Mori animation is “gloriously graphic” and needs to be “seen to be believed,” so if you’re a fan of all things guts and gore, The Ghoul is the one for you.
Tokyo Ghoul’s Ken Kaneki is live on the Dead by Daylight PBE right now, with a full Tokyo-themed cosmetic collection going live on Wednesday, April 2. There’s a Rize-inspired outfit to pay homage to the Ghoul who started it all, as well as four very rare outfits for survivors, and four very rare masks for killers.
