How do you use the Monster Hunter Wilds Charge Blade? A returning weapon, the Charge Blade has gone through a few changes, making it one of the most technical weapons in the MHW weapon lineup.

The Monster Hunter Wilds Charge Blade is a tricky MHW weapon, and not hugely beginner-friendly, though it does have good mobility and modes that lean into either sword, axe, or shield attacks, with plenty of elemental damage boosts. Though it’s versatile, it is technical and requires perfectly timed strikes and blocks to get the most from it.

How to use the Monster Hunter Wilds Charge Blade

The Charge Blade is a sword and shield but can be combined to create a powerful axe to land burst, chainsaw, and overcharged damage. It operates by using Phials, which are indicated in the top left corner under the sword charge.

To get Phials, you need to land attacks with the sword, and store the Phials in the shield; be sure to deposit the Phials, otherwise the sword instead repels enemies. Don’t worry, though, as you can’t have too many Phials, and though the idea of the Charge Blade is to keep them constantly topped up, Phials can transform into Overcharged Phials to land even more damage.

The Phials themselves can be spent in either sword or axe mode, to deal elemental boosts, elemental discharge, amped elemental discharge, or super amped elemental discharge, check out the moveset for both modes below. Also, note there’s a power axe mode, which can be triggered in two different ways, reduces your Phial usage, and provides extra saw damage.

Monster Hunter Wilds Charge Blade moveset

Sword mode

  • Weak Slash – a basic attack
  • Charged Double Slash – a charged attack
  • Forward Slash – leap forward and attack
  • Guard – use your shield to guard, time your shield to Perfect Guard, and then perform a Savage Axe Attack
  • Morph Slash – transform your weapon into the axe
  • Charge – fill your Phials with energy from you sword
  • Shield: Elemental Boost – spend Phials to enhance your Guard and allows you to perform the Super Amped Elemental Discharge with your axe
  • Sword: Elemental Boost – spend Phials to empower your sword, instead when you reach your energy limit on the sword, do not repel enemies
  • Fade Slash – move in a direction of your choice after each attack while in focus mode
  • Focus Slash – slash a wound by performing a leaping sword attack

Axe mode

  • Rising Slash – a basic attack
  • Elemental Discharge – use a Phial for a powerful attack
  • Amped Elemental Discharge – use as a combo and chain of attacks to use Phials to perform a powerful attack
  • Super Amped Elemental Discharge – use all your Phials to perform a very powerful attack
  • Morph Slash – transform your weapon back into the sword and shield
  • Focus Slash – slash a wound by performing a leaping axe attack

Power axe mode

You can use this mode to lengthen the duration of axe mode and lessen Phial usage in axe mode, including amped elemental discharge by half. You can stay in axe mode for double the time, before having to refill your Phials, and deal more damage when you chainsaw attacks on an enemy.

To enter power axe mode, you must perform a leaping attack onto a wound called Focus Slash, or after performing a Perfect Guard, use the Savage Axe Slash.

That’s how to use the Monster Hunter Wilds Charge Blade, for more on the weapons, here’s how to use the MHW Bow and MHW Sword and Shield for when the Monster Hunter Wilds release date lands next month.
