The Golden State Warriors are 24-24 and fighting for a place in the Play-In Tournament. They desperately need a number two scorer behind Stephen Curry and would love to add a star to their roster. Golden State has struck out for months, but Saturday proved anything can happen in the NBA.
The Mavericks stunningly traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers in a package for Anthony Davis. Nobody saw this move coming and it had implications across the NBA. Even LeBron James, Doncic, and Davis were surprised by the move. It may have helped Golden State short-term as both hopefuls need time to make the pieces fit.
Draymond Green is friends with LeBron, and fans heard rumblings about them pairing up. Golden State is struggling, and the Lakers’ newest addition only makes it more likely they land the Dubs’ defensive anchor at some point.
Draymond Green more likely to join the Lakers after Luka Doncic trade
Green is a fan of Doncic. The Mavericks were favorites to land the four-time All-Star when there were rumors of him leaving Golden State. That was in part because of Luka. Green has often come to his defense and rightfully has interest in teaming up with him at some point.
The odds only increase when factoring in Green’s relationship with LeBron. Draymond wants to be a Warrior for life, but the Lakers should be considered favorites to land him if it ever becomes time to move on. LA needs a defensive stopper with Luka as the new face of their franchise. Green is still one of the best on that end of the floor, and his improved shooting only makes him more lethal.
Warriors fans hope LeBron joins Draymond in the Bay Area, but King James is 40, and Golden State is not a serious title contender. James has deep roots in LA and has put up with the Lakers’ failure to improve their roster for years. Him leaving the franchise after trading for a 25-year-old superstar seems extremely unlikely.
Draymond is under contract for next season with a player option in 2026. The Warriors have much to sort out in the months ahead. Can they upgrade their roster enough to jump back into title contention? If not, do Curry and Green look for somewhere to chase another ring? Anything feels possible after the shocking trade that sent Luka to Los Angeles.
Draymond Green will forever be a Warriors legend. Klay Thompson’s departure to Dallas stung, but it did not change his greatness in the Bay Area. The same would be said if Green or Curry ever decide to leave.
The Golden State Warriors face a serious threat from the Los Angeles Lakers if Draymond Green wants out. Will that day come? The odds increased with this blockbuster trade, but only time will tell the tale.
