More than a decade since its last installment landed, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance revives the classic action games with a brand-new entry. After previously teasing it would be bringing back iconic names such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage, Sega has just revealed the long-awaited successor to the series of hack-and-slash platformers that first began back in 1987.
Shown during today’s PlayStation State of Play, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is built in collaboration with Streets of Rage 4 developer Lizardcube. It blends combat and platforming into a new 2D action game that restarts the adventures of its original protagonist Joe Musashi. Returning from his travels to find his village in ruins and his clan turned to stone, Joe sets out to seek his eponymous vengeance.
It feels like the time is right for Shinobi to return – the rise in popularity of soulslikes over the past decade shows there’s a reignited love for challenging games that push your skills to their limit. Today, we relish in the brutal bosses of Blasphemous, seek out secrets in Spelunky 2, dash and carve our way through Dead Cells, and wait – patiently, oh so patiently – for news of the Hollow Knight Silksong release date.
With an arsenal of weapons and skills including his clan’s legendary katana Oborozuki, kunai, and a range of Ninjutsu arts at his disposal, Joe is set to unleash devastating combos on any who stand in his way. He’ll even be able to pick up amulets to further enhance his abilities, or Ningi tools that can be used to pass obstacles and unlock multiple new paths as you play. It’s not all about fighting, of course; you can expect plenty of challenging platforming puzzles to put you to the test across more than a dozen hand-drawn stages.
Sega has set the Shinobi: Art of Vengeance launch date for Friday August 29, 2025. You can pre-order it now on Steam, priced at $29.99 for the base edition or $39.99 for the deluxe edition, with a bonus 10% discount if you buy it before launch. You can find it right here.
