If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a true, godly overseer during your Civilization 7 matches, or you want to up the challenge even more by trying to fend off motion sickness while trying to conquer its three ages, then boy do I have good news for you. Despite being in its infancy, a new version of Civ 7 has just launched, but it’s a bit of a niche one. You guessed it – you can now play Civilization 7 in VR.

It’s been almost two months since Civilization 7 launched, ending a long old wait for a new entry in the beloved strategy game series. While it didn’t stick the landing quite as well as we all hoped it would, Firaxis has been hard at work making improvements and adding new features to transform it into the genre-leading experience it should be. Very soon, a big new update will add more map randomization and variety, Teams Multiplayer, and what is essentially an endless mode option.

However, today a new version of Civ 7 has dropped for all of you virtual reality enjoyers out there. Live now on for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, Civilization 7 VR offers up the same core experience but sees the action play out on a round table that you can look down upon like a headset-wearing deity. You can zoom right in to inspect action up close, sliding the circular ‘board’ to move around the map. Menus, leader interactions, and other UI components float above the map at your eye level. All the while, the virtual room you play in boasts some beautifully distracting vistas out of the window, so if your own settlements and industries are descending into chaos beneath you, at least you can look out at something a bit more tranquil.

As well as single-player matches, Civ 7 VR also supports multiplayer against other Meta users, which I can imagine is quite a frenetic experience.

Judging by the user reviews posted to Civ 7’s Meta store page so far, it seems that there’s quite a lot of jank to smooth out, and as you’d anticipate from a VR game, the graphics aren’t on the same level as the crisp visuals we see in the PC and console versions. However, it is cheaper than the main game, coming in at $59.99 / £49.99.
