How do you open Overwatch 2 loot boxes? Loot boxes were an Overwatch 1 staple, so it’s no surprise that fans were a little disappointed when the random reward system was removed from the sequel. Over two years later, OW2 loot boxes have returned with the launch of Season 15.
While additional loot boxes are available from the paid Overwatch 2 battle pass, plenty of free boxes are available every week, so you don’t need to spend money on the free PC game. Whether you’re a new player to the FPS game or a returning veteran in need of a refresher, we’ve got all the details on OW2 loot boxes, how to get them, and how to open them.
How to open OW2 loot boxes
To open OW2 loot boxes, head to the ‘Loot Boxes’ screen from the main menu. Here, you can see how many boxes you have opened and how many you have remaining. You can open one box at a time or all unopened boxes at once.
Loot boxes reset at the start of every season. Any unopened boxes you have left at the end of the season are automatically opened, and the rewards appear in your inventory.
Loot box contents
Loot boxes and legendary loot boxes each grant four random items, including sprays, voice lines, victory poses, and more. These items are selected from previous seasonal content from Overwatch and Overwatch 2, with at least one rare item guaranteed from each box.
You are also guaranteed at least one epic item from each five consecutive box openings, and at least one legendary item from every 20 boxes. The number you have opened is tracked in the loot box menu.

How to get Overwatch 2 loot boxes
Each week, you can earn up to three loot boxes by completing up to 27 games, with wins counting as double. One free legendary loot box is available in the free track of the battle pass, with an additional two legendary loot boxes in the premium track.
Why were OW2 loot boxes removed?
Before the launch of Overwatch 2, the games industry was moving away from loot boxes as governments around the world started to regulate systems like this. While some companies made adjustments to keep their loot box model going, Blizzard decided to remove loot boxes entirely from Overwatch 2. This reward mechanic was replaced with the battle pass system, taking the random factor out of the cosmetics players could earn.
Many Overwatch 2 players felt like the battle pass system was considerably less generous than OW1’s loot boxes. Though OW2 has reintroduced loot boxes, they won’t be as easy to obtain as they were in the first game.
