We’re at a point now where deckbuilders can come in all shapes and sizes. Balatro takes the traditional 52 card deck in an all-new direction, Slay the Spire spins the genre towards turn-based combat, and Inscryption drenches the idea in an unsettling atmosphere. My point is, we’ve got so much choice that just calling a videogame a deckbuilder these days won’t tell you nearly enough. That said, it’s one of my favorite genres, so I’m always on the lookout for new experiences. If that’s you, too, then Humble has a new ‘pay what you want’ bundle filled with excellent games.
First up is Hellcard, a co-op roguelike deckbuilder made entirely out of paper. You build a deck from over 400 cards, recruit companions, and get to fighting. You stand in the middle of a circle, and need to utilize your deck, abilities, and even enemy monster placement to your advantage. It’s kind of a party-based RPG with a load of deckbuilding thrown in.
Then we have Fights in Tight Spaces, which blends Superhot’s style with close quarters combat. You need to always consider positioning, what cards (which translate to attacks) you have, and where each enemy is. Each level is incredibly compact, so you also need to use the space to your advantage. It’s like that opening bathroom brawl in Casino Royale if it were a videogame.
Hadean Tactics throws some autobattler elements into proceedings. You’ve got to defeat the Six Wings of Hell, and it turns out that roguelike deckbuilding is the way to do it. That means controlling units, recruiting trapped souls, and combining them with cards to come out on top.
Next up is Backpack Hero, which introduces Resident Evil 4-style inventory management to the genre. Moving items around doesn’t just mean you can fit that next weapon in your backpack, either, as putting them in the right place can even increase their power. If you want to survive the endless procedural dungeons, you’ll need to use all the times you’ve packed supermarket shopping to your advantage.
You can also choose to buy Death Roads: Tournament, if you want a spot of Mad Max-inspired vehicular slaughter in your deckbuilder. You need to upgrade your ride, mercilessly decimate other drivers on the road, and do whatever you can to survive. Lastly we have Ash of Gods: The Way, which is perfect for anyone who’s a fan of the medieval era and wants to bludgeon their digital enemies to death.
