From Balatro to Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, last year’s breakout deckbuilders were all about playing cards. In 2025, dice might be the hottest trend. Pulling from one of my favorite roguelikes ever, Dicey Dungeons, along with the fundamentals that keep me coming back to the likes of Slay the Spire, Spellrogue is a smart spellcasting spin on the format. Built by Guidelight Games and published by Deep Rock Galactic studio Ghost Ship, it’s earned itself a ‘very positive’ user rating of 87% since it hit early access in February 2024, and now the full launch is finally here.
Like some of the best roguelikes of recent years, each run of Spellrogue sends you down a different branching path. When combat breaks out, your spells are laid in a row along the bottom of the screen, and you must activate them by rolling a set of dice and placing appropriately numbered results into the corresponding slots. Some abilities might deal damage based on the value used, while others will split dice up into multiple smaller outcomes – with more than 350 to discover, each with two upgrades, you’ll be experimenting for a long time before you’ve seen it all.

Spellrogue 1.0 packs a whole lot more into the mix, starting with the final chapter of the main progression and plenty of new enemies to discover. “Unlock the truth, unravel the secrets of the universe, and prepare for the end,” Guidelight teases. To help you get there is the game’s fourth playable dice slinger, Sefyra the Windcaller. Joining the existing trio of Azar, Lapis, and Hazel, Sefyra specializes in air spells and makes use of wind, lightning, and aura effects.
Her air magic combines status effects, enchanted dice, and mechanics that unleash strong combos with plenty of crossover between deck archetypes, ensuring there are plenty of different ways to build her. Many of her skills can shift position on your board depending on the dice you use, unleashing specific effects as they move. Others provide bonuses to adjacent abilities, adding another consideration to how you line them up.
Alongside this comes the introduction of daily challenges to keep you coming back, along with more of just about everything: expect new spells, rituals, artifacts, enchanted dice, music, and achievements. Additional quality-of-life improvements have also been made, including game speed settings to tweak the pace to your liking, and extra language support.
Spellrogue 1.0 is out now on Steam. Expect to pay $19.99 / £15.99. Head here to take a look if you’re ready to start casting your way through the crowds.
