Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and her cabinet ministers attended Yamuna aarti at Vasudev Ghat in the national capital today.
Cabinet ministers Parvesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh along with other BJP leaders attended the aarti.
Before the aarti, Gupta and her cabinet ministers offered prayers at Vasudev Ghat.
Speaking to the media after the Yamuna aarti, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said, “Today, during the aarti of Maa Yamuna, we remembered our resolution to clean the river. We will use the needed resources, and it will be our priority.”
Earlier, the preparations were underway for the aarti and a cleaning process was being carried out in the Yamuna River near Vasudev Ghat.
Where Is Vasudev Ghat?
Vasudev Ghat is located along Yamuna River’s western bank between Yamuna Ghat and Nigam Bodh Ghat, which is in Kashmere Gate.
This is the first ghat which has been built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). It was inaugurated by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena in March 2024. Earlier, it was inaccessible because of 1.5-foot-deep silt deposits and a steep slope which was filled with garbage.
After restoration, the riverbank boasts of lush greens and carved pavilions. It has seasonal flower beds filled with tulips, marigolds, and sadabahar, 400,000 riverine grass saplings and more than 2,000 native and naturalised trees.
There are three entrances to the 145-metre ghat and it has 25 steps to descend to the river. The DDA has also installed a statue of “Maa Yamuna” along with a chhatri which covers a 300kg metal bell. The bell has been brought from Jalesar in Uttar Pradesh and it has a unique vibration.
Yamuna Aarti At Vasudev Ghat
Since the BJP won the Delhi assembly elections, in which cleaning of Yamuna River was a major issue, the first time a grand evening ‘aarti’ was performed on the banks of the river on Tuesday.
The aarti was performed at Vasudev Ghat amid the glow of oil lamps and chants of hymns and various devotees had gathered to offer their prayers.
Speaking about the Yamuna aarti, VHP Delhi prant mantri Surender Gupta said, “I believe the time has come for Delhi to become Indraprastha. The rule of yogis is about to begin, and I want to express my gratitude to the respected lieutenant governor, whose efforts have made this beautiful place possible.”
The beginning of ‘Yamun aarti’ held a major significance as it underlined BJP’s efforts to clean River Yamuna after assembly polls.
Yamuna’s pollution was a major election issue for the BJP which has come into power in the national capital after 27 years by ending AAP’s decade-long governance.
The cleaning of the Yamuna River, which has been sketched as a four-pronged strategy, began on Sunday.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has given directions to the officials to expedite the process after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his commitment to clean the river while speaking during the victory celebrations of BJP.
The officials have already deployed weed harvesters, dredgers and trash skimmers to clean the Yamuna River.
The government is working towards cleaning the entire 57 km stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi which flows from Haryana to the Uttar Pradesh border while passing through the capital city.
