Border Pioneer might be an eclectic mix of genres, but it’s still a strategy game at heart. You start by venturing into the pixelated wilds and constructing towns. Think of it like a medieval Cities Skylines, where you need to build up the settlement, shape its defenses, and prepare for whatever might show its ugly face. While it might sound like a city building game, then, you also need to collect a deck from over 200 different cards, which will help you to overcome challenges and strengthen your fortifications when each is used at the right moment.
Now that your bustling town is built and the end of the in-game month has rolled around, you’re under attack. Waves of enemies are heading right for your settlement in an effort to destroy it. You must keep an eye on your defenses, soldiers, and offensive capabilities all at once, in the hope you can survive and fortify for another day.
Border Pioneer has a healthy mix of chance, strategy, and preparation – which is coincidentally what makes for the most intense gameplay. I love the idea of needing to find and hold onto the cards as well, as it adds another layer of decision-making with you choosing exactly when to use each to turn the tide of battle.
