In unsurprising news, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT launch has apparently been a huge success so far for the chipmaker. An interview with AMD’s CEO provided some additional insight into the launch of this new gaming GPU, with the RX 9070 XT described as a “fantastic success” that led to ten times more first-week sales compared to last-gen AMD Radeon GPU launches.
AMD has done extremely well to position the RX 9070 XT as the go-to choice for most gamers, which is why it’s now the top recommendation for the average gamer in our best graphics card guide. It balances performance and price well, at least at the MSRP, while providing Nvidia with serious competition in the mid-tier gaming market for the first time in years.

In a YouTube video interview conducted by Tony Yu, Asus China’s general manager, AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su explained that the company was “very excited” by the response to the new graphics card. The 9070 XT has proved to be the “number one seller” in first-week sales compared to any other AMD Radeon launches, according to Su, who also confirmed that the company is “increasing manufacturing” to help deliver more cards to “happy” gamers.
While this is undoubtedly a good news story for AMD, the company hasn’t been a huge player in the GPU market lately. A ten times increase in sales would suggest that the company is making progress, but that’s coming from a low starting point, as Nvidia continues to be the obvious market leader with a reported 90% share of the GPU market as recently as Q4 2024, according to figures published by Jon Peddie Research.
This interview follows comments made recently by AMD VP David McAfee about the RX 9070 XT launch, who described the demand for the GPU as “unprecedented” for the company. Those comments, combined with sales ten times higher than other earlier card launches, would suggest that AMD wasn’t completely prepared for the popularity of the RX 9070 XT on launch day.
Either way, supply constraints across the board have made it tricky for gamers to pick up this GPU for themselves, especially at its MSRP. We’ll be hoping that AMD is able to respond as quickly as McAfee has suggested it will be delivering new stock with stable and affordable prices by Q2 2025.
