AMD is reportedly preparing to release another Ryzen Z2 Extreme model, this time with AI features. While not much is known about the chip right now, a leaker has referred to its existence, alongside another previously unknown chip, bringing the total reported Ryzen Z2 lineup to five products.
We’re expecting to see the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme in some of the best handheld gaming PC designs in 2025 and beyond, but this new, leaked AI-focused model has appeared out of nowhere. It will reportedly be released alongside the three confirmed AMD Ryzen Z2 chips, plus one additionally leaked product.
Not much is known about this supposed AI-focused SoC beyond leaker AnhPhuH posting what is supposedly the full Ryzen Z2 lineup to X. The full leaked list includes:
- Ryzen Z2 – Confirmed
- Ryzen Z2 A
- Ryzen Z2 Go – Confirmed
- Ryzen Z2 Extreme – Confirmed
- Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme
Little else is offered, but we can speculate that the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is the same as the base Z2 Extreme, just without the NPUs (neural processing units) being disabled. If this is the case, it will have eight Zen 5 CPU cores and 16 RDNA 3.5 compute units.
Having tested out the MSI Claw 8 AI+, the AI engine using Intel’s NPU hardware is one of the biggest features of the handheld, but it’s not perfect. Refinement is needed before you can entirely rely on AI to manage the system performance of a gaming handheld.
If AMD is indeed aiming to enable similar features with this rumored AI chip, based on the Strix Point architecture, it could make gaming the next generation of gaming handhelds much easier, as the guesswork around TDP settings and performance is handled entirely by the SoC.
