Leaked photos have emerged online that suggest a new AMD Radeon RX 9070 GPU is coming, with a cut-down spec and a cheaper price. Reportedly based on the same RDNA 4 architecture as AMD’s acclaimed new GPUs, the new Radeon RX 9070 GRE looks set to come with less VRAM and fewer stream processors.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Radeon RX 9070 GRE rumors, as leaks about this unannounced AMD GPU have been swirling for a few weeks now. This is the first time we’ve seen pictures of a graphics card based on the GPU, though. Given that the similarly cut-down Radeon RX 7900 GRE ended up with a place on our best graphics card guide, we’re excited to see if this new GPU can deliver similarly decent performance for under $500.
The new leak comes via Videocardz, which claims to have received photos of two PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE graphics cards. According to the information on the boxes, the 9070 GRE has 12GB of VRAM, rather than the 16GB found on the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT. Two PowerColor cards are pictured, a Red Devil model, which will reportedly have the same cooler as the equivalent 9070 XT card, but with two 8-pin power connectors, as on the standard 9070 version of this card.
The site also claims that the Radeon RX 9070 GRE will be based on the same Navi 48 GPU used in the other 9070 cards, but with 3,072 stream processors, rather than the 3,584 found in the standard 9070. Based on the structure of AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture, this means the GPU is likely to feature 48 compute units with 48 RT cores, along with 96 AI cores.
Meanwhile, the 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM is very likely to be attached to a 192-bit bus, and Videocardz says it will be downclocked to 18Gbps, compared to 20Gbps on the 9070. GPU clock speeds look set to be high, though, with the site suggesting the 9070 GRE boost clock will be 2.79GHz as standard, a significant jump from the top 2,520MHz boost clock of the standard 9070. However, the rumored core spec shows a significant reduction in processing power and memory, so it would need to be priced competitively.
The big question for us is when and where this rumored GPU will end up being released. The Radeon RX 7900 GRE, where the GRE stood for Golden Rabbit Edition, was originally only launched in China, but eventually received a worldwide release. The packaging in the photos has both English and Chinese lettering on it, and Videocardz suggests that the cards are currently only planned to be released in China. We’ll have to wait and see if this rumored new GPU also gets a worldwide release, but it could be a good one if AMD gets the pricing right.
I was really impressed by the performance of the new RDNA 4 architecture in my recent Radeon RX 9070 XT review, as well as my 9070 review, although it’s become very hard to find both cards at AMD’s original MSRPs anywhere now.
