How does Oblivion Remastered lockpicking work? The lockpicking minigame from Oblivion was always a polarizing subject, with some players saying it was too finicky and others insisting that it was just right. Lockpicking is an important skill to master in Oblivion Remastered, as many of the RPG’s secrets are behind closed (and locked, obviously) doors.
With Oblivion Remastered stealthily dropping in our laps, players have had to quickly re-learn skills they may not have used for quite some time, one of which being that a particular flick of the wrist and distinctive clunk sound that accompanies the cracking of a lock, or in some cases, the maddening snap of a broken lockpick. Here are some tips for lockpicking in the RPG, and where you can find yourself some new picks if the need arises.
How to pick locks in Oblivion Remastered
Each lock in Oblivion Remastered is based on your standard barrel lock, with several internal pins keeping it shut tight. The aim here is to push the pins to their correct spot and hold them in place. You do this by maneuvering your lockpick left and right, underneath a pin, and moving the mouse up; the pin will shoot upwards and slowly work its way back to the original position.
The aim is to press the space bar when the pin is in the correct position. You’ll know this because the pin will hold still momentarily. If you can flick the pin up and hold it in place, the lock will open, and you’ll have access to whatever it was securing.
If you mistime pressing the space bar, your lockpick will break, and depending on your Security skill, several pins may reset to their original position, so make sure you have a healthy supply of lockpicks on hand.
How to get more lockpicks in Oblivion Remastered
In the tutorial area, you’ll notice that lockpicks can be found in a multitude of places: barrels, the corpses of enemies, and even skeletons. You can find lockpicks in all the places you would usually find loot, but they can also be purchased from more nefarious vendors like Shady Sam, a hooded figure who skulks on the outskirts of the Imperial City. You’ll find him to the left of the door to the Talos Plaza District, outside the northwest section of the City.
Joining the Thieves guild will also give you access to a huge supply of lockpicks. You will also be exposed to many opportunities to use your newfound lockpicking skills, raising your Security level to the point where you’ll be breezing through locks like they weren’t there.
Now that you know how to lockpick like a pro in Oblivion Remastered, you’ll have no problem securing an ungodly amount of loot in the open world game. Put those riches to good use and get kitted out with the best gear so you can take on every Oblivion Remastered quest, probably saving the world in the process.
