RuneScape: Dragonwilds just got shadow-dropped on Steam in early access

An open-world, Valheim-like spin-off of the eponymous massively multiplayer online game, RuneScape: Dragonwilds tasks groups of up to four adventurers with surviving a harsh world beset by all manner of dangerous beasties, most notably gigantic dragons who seek to make players’ lives a living hell. Exploring, crafting, and building settlements is the name of the game, and only through careful and strategic cooperation will RuneScape: Dragonwilds players live to see another day.

“We’re committed to making RuneScape: Dragonwilds a community-driven game that players want to come back to again and again,” Jagex says on its Steam page. “The best way to make a game we know fans will love, is to make it with them! RuneScape games have always been better for community voice being at its heart, and we’re taking that same mindset in listening to the community from day one.”

As for how long RuneScape: Dragonwilds will remain in early access, the developers estimate the game might be ready for an official release in early 2026. The full version of the game is planned to include more systems, spells, skills, quests, enemies, seasonal events, and crafting resources. RuneScape: Dragonwilds will also see a price increase in the transition from early access (currently $29.99) to launch, but players won’t be charged for updates during this testing period.

“We want to spend the time to get everything right to make sure that our players get a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends again and again,” the developer added. “We’ve run a number of closed Alpha tests with players from all over the globe, and the results have been amazing. That feedback was fundamental in helping us refine the experience for Early Access and we aim to continue working alongside our community.”

While RuneScape: Dragonwilds may be available exclusively through Steam at the moment, it inexplicably requires an Epic Games login to play. Who knows, maybe the growing backlash will see Jagex remove the requirement à la Helldivers 2 and its PlayStation Network account fiasco, but for now, at least keep that in mind before you rush off and grab an early access copy.
