Samsung has a good reputation in the PC storage world, with a number of its drives making it onto our best gaming SSD shortlist. You’ll struggle to find a capable 1TB drive with PCIe 4.0 speeds coupled with a price tag as low as this one from a known brand, especially under current market conditions, making it a great budget upgrade or second drive for your gaming collection.
The Samsung 990 Evo is technically marketed as a PCIe 5.0 drive, but I’ll clear up some confusion on that first. It can only use two PCIe 5.0 lanes, rather than four, which means that it isn’t any quicker than a standard 4x PCIe 4 drive.
Putting that claim aside, the 990 Evo does offer a top sequential read speed of 5,000MB/s, with sequential write speeds hitting 4,2000MB/s. While that isn’t as quick as the fastest 4x PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 drives out there, it’s still significantly faster than any SATA drive on the market, where 600MB/s is as fast as it gets, while also staying ahead of older PCIe 3.0 drives, too.
