It’s no secret that Battlefield 2042 struggled at launch. EA’s latest attempt at bringing back its flagship military series wasn’t met with the explosion the developer hoped for, and that’s why the next entry in the franchise looks to be going back to basics. However you feel about the specialist system, though, EA has at least spent the last few years massively supporting the shooter. Now, the latest update is here, and it introduces an all-new event filled with a rogue AI, robots, and some revamped ways to play.
Battlefield 2042’s new War Machine event is a big moment for the struggling FPS game. Not only is EA introducing more game modes and cosmetics to entice players back, but the shooter now has robots. No, I’m not kidding, the futuristic setting is going full Chappie and introducing mechanical men to challenge you. A rogue AI is sending a relentless horde your way, after all, so it’s up to you to stop them.

This comes in the form of three game modes. First up is Domination, where you need to hold a majority of the capture points to take back control of precious resources. Pretty standard multiplayer shooter stuff. Then there’s King of the Hill, coming on Tuesday April 1, where you need to hold a single capture point. The most interesting of these modes is easily Override, though, where you’ll need to take up arms against the almost endless hordes of rogue AI. EA explains it as a Rush Co-op mode, so you and some friends will need to head for terminals and wipe out any AI in your path.
To accompany the War Machine event there’s also a new pass, divided up into free and premium tiers. The free tier has three specialist skins, the AN-94 weapon, and two gun skins. The premium pass, meanwhile, comes with four specialist and weapon skins, alongside a 20% even XP booster.
Battlefield 2042’s new War Machine event is running from Tuesday March 18 to Tuesday April 15, with three new modes and an event pass available. You can even grab BF2042 for $4.79 / £3.99 until Thursday March 20, if you’re new. Just head here.
