But World War Z, the supremely underrated and underplayed undead survival sim from Saber, offers something unique. More than any of its rivals, it delivers ghouls in enormous numbers, challenging you to take down hordes that feel almost impossible in size. If you’ve never tried it before, the expanded edition, World War Z Aftermath, is now completely free to keep.
Originally released back in 2019, World War Z is based on the movie rather than the book, and drops teams of up to four players into large-scale battles against zombies that can sprint, jump, and climb. Across a globetrotting campaign, your task is to cleanse some of the world’s greatest landmarks and most recognizable cities of the undead infestation. You can choose between different character classes, upgrade your weapons, and gain levels to access greater challenges. It’s a zombie game with survival game elements.
Saber’s Swarm Engine is what really makes World War Z. If you can steal a spare second, stand back and just watch the zombies as they run towards you. There are hundreds, thousands, all spilling over the architecture like lumpy, foul-smelling water. It’s a sight to behold. Launched in 2023, the Aftermath upgrade lets you play in first-person, and also introduces six new missions and 60fps support.
