If you glance at my PCGamesN author profile, you’d make the assumption that my Steam library is full of high fantasy adventures and bloody, vampire-focused RPGs. You wouldn’t exactly be wrong, but nestled amid the Baldur’s Gate 3s and Plague Tales is Armored Core 6, a somewhat baffling pick when you consider what’s around it. Where I love the feeling of traversing vibrant, magical worlds, there’s nothing quite like stomping around in a huge hunk of metal and blasting foes into oblivion. That’s exactly what Mecha Break is offering, but on a multiplayer scale that includes everything from a traditional hero shooter mode to an extraction game a la Tarkov.
Mecha Break‘s premise is probably exactly what you expect it to be: the world has suffered an apocalyptic event, known as the Catastrophe. While Corite, a brand-new mineral, has saved Earth’s struggling energy industry, its eerie corruption has destroyed the world’s habitable spaces, and its your job to stop it in its tracks.
Characterized by high-paced mecha action akin to Armored Core, the multiplayer game offers three different ways to play: 3v3 deathmatch, 6v6 hero shooter-style brawls, and a unique extraction mode akin to Escape from Tarkov. You’ll be able to choose from five different mechs, each with their own specializations, then you’ll take to the skies in a battle for the ages.

You’ll be able to customize your mech to mirror your specific playstyle. Weapons like the hefty battle axe deal huge damage up close, while the laser sword can cut foes to ribbons and let you dart around the battlefield. Alternatively if you, like me, prefer to be on the backline, you can snipe away to your heart’s content, tearing off your enemy’s armor one plate at a time.
As you progress through the game, you’ll recruit new pilots, each of which has their own unique personality and backstory. You can customize your mech, too; whether you want to go full D.Va from Overwatch and paint everything bright pink, or recreate Keanu Reeves rusty old Armored Core from Amazon’s Secret Level, the choice is all yours.
To top it off there’s the extraction mode, which is a little bit different from the 3v3 and 6v6 brawls. Your three-person squad has been sent to scope out the Mashmak Islands, the largest Corite resource zone out there. You’ll be facing off against other players as well as enemy NPCs, so you’ll need to strategize to ensure that you’re piloting the right mechs for the job.
If all of this sounds right up your street, a brand new Mecha Break demo is currently available on Steam. This is a pre-load, however, with the playable snippet of the game launching on Sunday February 23 at 2am PST / 5am EST / 10am BST / 11am CEST. Note that your progress won’t carry across to the full release. You can pre-load the demo here.
