Free Steam survival game Once Human made a big splash in 2024, standing tall alongside the likes of Palworld and Sons of the Forest. While things have been slightly quieter, it still pulls in an impressive player count regularly, and developer Starry Studio has big plans for the year ahead. Eyes might be on the mobile launch in April and the three new scenarios coming in the third quarter of the year, but there’s a good reason to come back to Once Human today with the introduction of another seasonal event, a new instrument, and additional quality-of-life upgrades.
Once Human update 1.4.1 arrives today, Wednesday February 12, and introduces the ‘Crimson Moon’ event to the ongoing Visional Wheel. If you’re not up to speed on the survival game’s seasonal system, it mixes things up with a series of special modifiers. The first outing, Lunar Oracle, ramps up risk and reward in equal measure under the light of a blood moon, and the new event means you’ll now find strange rubies in any scenarios affected by the Lunar Oracle.

You’ll acquire these rubies by fighting Deviants or gathering, and they’ll be used at an event shop where you’ll be able to snag a range of weapon skins and furniture crafting recipes. Starry also teases that, when the current season reaches its third phase in March, you’ll gain the ability to dye your furniture items to make decorating your base even more rewarding. While there’s a weekly cap on the rubies you can earn, any unused excess will roll over to the next week, stacking up to a total of four weeks.
If you’ve been eager for more musical options, you’re in luck – the Folk Guitar is a new instrument that will give you plenty of potential for a rousing singalong. You can buy the formula to craft it from NPCs in either Deadsville or Camp Igloo. Elsewhere, both versions of the ‘Dig to Hell’ public crisis event have been made easier to complete, and campsites left out in the wilderness will now be automatically recalled after a set amount of time.
Finally, Starry has introduced a welcome alternative threat alert indicator. If you find the flat white arrow difficult to parse, a 3D indicator is now available instead that gives you a more simple and precise pointer at any incoming danger. You can toggle between these in the settings menu – Starry notes that any settings you’ve not seen before will be marked, along with the appropriate category tabs, to make them easy to find.
Once Human update 1.4.1 launches Wednesday February 12. Servers will go down for maintenance at 8pm PT / 11pm ET / 4am GMT / 5am CET, and the downtime is expected to last for two hours. You can take a closer look at all the details courtesy of Starry Studio, including new cosmetic Lightforge Loot Crate and shop bundle items that will be available in the game’s store.
