Who are the Avowed companions? Any party-based RPG worth its salt will offer up a fine selection of companions with whom you’ll tour the world, defeat great evils, and revel in the resulting riches. Developer Obsidian has conjured up four fine kith to accompany you through the Living Lands, and we’ve got the full rundown on who they are and what they bring to the table.
As a Pillars of Eternity spinoff, the diverse cast of Avowed companions features creeds and cultures that’ll be familiar if you’ve dabbled in the expansive RPG game series. If you’ve already checked out our Avowed voice actors guide, you’ll know Obsidian isn’t playing around when it comes to getting top-tier talent in to bring them to life. That’s enough yapping, let’s meet your soon-to-be-compatriots.
Avowed companions
Avowed allows you to bring two companions with you at any given time, leaving the remaining members of the squad back at the camp where you can still interact with them. It should be noted that, at certain points in the game, a particular companion must be included in your party to progress, so hopefully you’ll grow to love them all (relatively) equally.
The four Avowed companions are:
Giatta
Class: Wizard
Race: Ocean Human
Location: Unknown
Hailing from an animancer community, Giatta Castell’s pursuit of soul science is driven by the tragic loss of her parents to a lab accident. Wielding the phantasmal focus, the powerful invention partly responsible for her family’s death, Giatta can draw on the spiritual currents flowing through the Living Lands to heal and protect allies.
Giatta’s complexity as a character isn’t only displayed through her carrying the very tool that contributed to her parents’ death – morbid stuff – but also through her attitude towards the Dreamscourge that’s central to Avowed’s overarching plot. While some see the soul plague as a chaotic entity that needs to be stamped out, Giatta is far more laissez-faire.
During the June 2024 Xbox deep dive, game director Carrie Patel says Giatta believes “this chaos is part of who we are – it’s part of what makes the Living Lands special. Don’t try to tame it. Don’t try to end it. Embrace it and cherish it and kind of nurture and tend to it.” Regardless of which ideology prevails, Giatta doesn’t seem like the type who’ll quietly compromise on her ideals.
Kai
Class: Fighter
Race: Costal Aumaua
Location: Claviger’s Landing, Dawnshore
It’s not y’arrrrd to figure out what Kai’s profession was before he became a mercenary – the cutlass/pistol combo is a dead giveaway. A former member of the Rauataian Navy, Kai deserted the ranks after what was probably a pretty rough time in the Deadfire Archipelago, seeking refuge in the settlement of Thirdborn in the Living Lands.
Speaking to Xbox Wire in June 2023, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart says Kai has an “idealistic and pragmatic temperament,” which will go a long way to making sure you make it through your adventure in one piece. Additionally, Kai’s cosplay guide reckons he’s the companion you’d vote ‘most likely to have a beer with.’ If the ol’ sea dog can handle his ale as well as he can handle his weaponry, we wouldn’t recommend taking him on.
For those who haven’t read our voice actors guide, Kai is voiced by Brandon Keener (y’know, Garrus from Mass Effect). Sharing a voice actor with the universe’s most eligible Turian means we can drop game on Kai as we can with Garrus right? Right? Marius
Class: Ranger
Race: Mountain Dwarf
Location: Galawain’s Tusks
What would happen if you spliced Gimli with Legolas? Okay, Marius isn’t quite the physical result we’d imagine, but nonetheless, the bow-wielding dwarf has foregone axes and mountains for bows and the wilds.
Hailing from the harsh mountainous region of Galawain’s Tusks, Marius is no stranger to hostile terrain and has become one of the Living Lands’ foremost hunters and guides. A nomadic entity, Marius prefers the call of the wildnerness to the extroversion of modern society. It’s unsurprising, then, that Patel described him in a 2024 interview with RPG Site as “a little more reserved, a little more cautious” than his fellow companions.
Yatzli
Class: Wizard
Race: Hearth Orlan
Location: Emerald Stair
A self-described “wizard extraordinaire” and Godless expert, Yatzli packs a lot of knowledge and power into her tiny Orlan frame. Patel warns during the Xbox deep dive that “if you flirt with Yatzli, she will flirt back,” though only in jest as she already has a lover.
“A little lightning ball with a lot of personality,” as Patel attests, Yatzli will ensure your journey never has a dull moment. A spirited adventurer, she has a particular interest in hunting down Godless artifacts regardless of how dangerous the ruins they reside in are.
