If you can’t wait for Monster Hunter Wilds, you might be seeking something to fill the gap, but there aren’t many things that quite match up to Capcom’s best RPG series. One great alternative, however, is Granblue Fantasy Relink, an action-driven JRPG with plenty of bold boss fights and a gear-driven endgame that comes close enough to scratching that Monster Hunter itch. Boasting a very positive 89% Steam user rating from over 34,000 reviews, it’s at its lowest price ever on the Valve store, making now a great time to try it.
Granblue Fantasy Relink did well for itself at launch, reaching an impressive high of more than 114,000 active players. But given the swelling popularity of games like Monster Hunter, which is only getting bigger as we prepare for the launch of Wilds, I think there are even more people out there who would enjoy it. While the initial story mode can be a little deceptive, lasting roughly a dozen hours and being more narratively driven, the real meat of Relink comes when you reach the endgame. Structurally, it transforms into something rather akin to Monster Hunter, and becomes one of the best RPGs of its type in recent years.
Each member of the game’s cast has a distinct way to play, much like changing between the various Monster Hunter Wilds weapons. The tutorials make picking up another character and sorting their gear out easy to understand, and grinding out upgrades makes a really noticeable difference to your power level, so your time investment always feels worthwhile. There’s even a handy wishlist feature to keep track of whatever you’re targeting next.
Since Granblue is also part gacha game, there’s a flood of colorful characters and lore to dig into. Alongside that, expect a good blend of major fights, side missions, and special assignments to keep up the pace as you progress.
Relink is great fun to play alone, with lots of potential variety to the action if you want it, but enough depth to focus on mastering a single play style if that’s more your speed. Bring some friends, however, and you’ve got one of the best co-op games of last year on your hands. With a new Steam sale dropping the price to its lowest yet, this might just be the right time to get a group of friends together and all jump on board.
Granblue Fantasy Relink is 55% off on Steam until Tuesday February 4, meaning you’ll pay just $26.99 / £22.49 for your copy. Get it here.
